Top 10 money saving tips

As a throw-away nation, we can find it hard to cut back on spending money. So we asked the mums in the askamum community what handy tips they had for cutting back and saving the pennies. Here is a round up of the best tips.

1. rainbows said: BOOTSALES! :) We made over £130 last weekend selling all the junk which seems to multiply in our garage. We also bought some great bargains such as Jasper Conran baby clothes and an almost new growbag for 20p!

2. Wally said: Don’t open emails from any company saying big sale etc ....if you don’t open it you cant spend anything!

3. Febes said: When you buy concentrated fabric conditioner, when you are halfway through, top it up with normal water and it lasts longer.

4. lilmamma says: Use distilled white vinegar instead of fabric softener, it also helps get rid of black mould and lime-scale inside your machine.

5. Jedimum said: Be cheeky -  if have a friend or acquaintance a little older than yours don't be shy to ask for their hand me downs.  Also don't be afraid to ask for exactly what you want on Freecycle - I got loads of really nice stuff for nothing.

6. Bexnjoshie said: Only use half the recommended dose of washing powder it states on the packet. It works just as well and lasts twice as long.

7. EarthMumma said: Save money on expensive eye creams by using Preparation H (Pile Cream) meant for your backside on your face. It will shrink your bags and save you a fortune in expensive eye creams.

8. Carol1 said: Go to the charity shop to buy your clothes. I try and go to charity shops in the posher areas of town. I bought Miss Sixty jeans the other week for just a tenner and there was nothing wrong with them. Plus everyone loves rooting around for a bargain!

9. Lizziemum said: Renegotiate your phone contract. You would be surprised at how much money you can save each month just by threatening your current supplier to quit if they don’t give you a better deal!

10. rainbows said: The kids are given £1 pocket money which seems to buy them endless toys and games at Car Boot sales. They also are so proud of themselves when they get to pick and buy the item all by themselves! This saves us a fortune rather than buying everything new from the shops, and also it turns into a fun day out – who can get the most bargains!
